SUMMARY:Findlay Foundry Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Findlay’s Limited of Carleton Place was once a household name in much of Canada. \nOn May 24\, 2025\, The Carleton Place and Beckwith Museum will open “Findlay’s Foundry: Moulding Our Town”\, an exhibition celebrating the foundry and the family. \nDavid Findlay of Paisley\, Scotland\, arrived in the village of Carleton Place in 1858. Trained as an iron moulder\, he found work at the Fuller iron foundry and by 1860 had built his own small foundry in a log barn on Charlotte Street. \nOriginally producing ploughs and agricultural tools\, Findlay began the manufacture of stoves in 1876. They were an immediate success\, as an editorial in the Carleton Place “Herald”\, October 16\, 1879\, attests: “Since the cold mornings have set in\, we have given Mr. Findlay’s new stove a trial. With one or two sticks of hardwood it will keep up a moderate heat all night and can be used for either coal or wood.” \nBy the time David Findlay died in 1890\, Findlay stoves were being shipped all over the country. The business was being run by his two eldest sons\, David and William. Under their ownership\, the company widened production to such items as gas and electric ranges\, furnaces and cast-iron cookware. \nFindlay’s was more than a foundry – it helped mould our community! \nBy sheer size the foundry loomed large in Carleton Place. The massive brick building stretched from High Street to the Mississippi River between Water and McLaren streets. There was no way you could escape its presence. The factory whistle\, heard all over town\, gave order to each weekday\, blowing six times a day and defining mealtimes for all. \nAfter more than a century of ownership\, Findlay’s was sold to a Quebec firm in 1965. The High Street foundry building was closed in 1972 and demolished in 1974\, but remnants of Findlay history are still visible all through town. \nOn Saturday\, March 29\, we’re inviting all former Findlay workers (and their families) to join us for an afternoon at the museum to chat\, to remember and to reminisce! In preparation for our upcoming summer exhibit all about Findlay’s we are hoping to connect with former workers\, their families\, and anyone in the community with stories to share about Findlay’s Limited and the Findlay family. \nWe’ll have the coffee on\, some snacks\, and Findlay displays and memorabilia on exhibit. Staff will be collecting information and memories to help us put together our summer exhibit. Bring your stories and your friends (and maybe some Findlay “stuff”!) \nFor more information contact us at 613-253-7013 or cpbmuseum@outlook.com

SUMMARY:Library Adult Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Adult Book Club is meeting on Monday\, April 14th at 6:30pm in the Barbara Walsh Room at the library. This month\, we’re reading THE BOOK OF RAIN by Thomas Wharton.  Here is a little about the book: \nA groundbreaking\, deeply affecting work of environmental literary suspense for fans of Cloud Atlas\, The Overstory\, and Station Eleven. \nThe northern Alberta mining town of River Meadows is one of three hotspots in the world producing ghost ore\, a new source of energy. The ore is worth twenty-eight times its weight in gold\, but it’s also linked with slippages of time and space that gradually render the area uninhabitable. After the town is evacuated\, the whole region is cordoned off in an attempt to contain the deadly phenomena\, with the no-go zone behind its high fences soon wryly nicknamed “the Park.” \nFrom an ancient almanac to a flock of chatty birds\, a cacophony of voices rise together throughout history to tell this story–but at its heart are four young gamechangers\, linked through River Meadows\, whose impact extends long beyond their lifetimes. After Ben Hewitt was killed in a mining accident\, his widow and his two children\, Alex and Amery\, were among the first to be shipped out of town. Now an accomplished game designer\, Alex has moved on from the disaster\, but his sister hasn’t. As a little girl\, Amery tried to rescue the local wildlife from the effects of the ore; as an adult she’s begun making increasingly dangerous break-ins into the toxic wasteland to save animals trapped there. When she fails to return from a trip inside the fence\, Alex has no choice but to return to River Meadows to search for her\, enlisting her friend and fellow activist\, Michio Amano\, a mathematician who must transcend the known laws of physics if he and Alex are to find her. \nThen there’s Claire Foley\, who fled River Meadows as a teenager and never looked back\, and who now traffics in endangered wildlife under the cover of working for a travel publisher. As Alex and Michio search for Amery\, Claire arrives at a legendary island nation for what should be a routine job–but when she meets the very last of an endangered crane species\, she must make the choice of her life. As sweeping in scope as a world of its own\, The Book of Rain upends the very constraints of form\, language\, and imagination\, illuminating the infinite wisdom of nature and the reverberations of our flawed stewardship in this Epic of Gilgamesh for our times.”– \nWe prefer all members to attend our book clubs in person as technical issues can make book clubs frustrating for everyone. Our discussions are lively and it’s a great way to meet new people while trying new genres and learning how to read critically. If you can’t make a book club in person one month\, that’s okay—feel free to join us at the library again the following month! \nIf you’d like to know a bit more about our Adult Book Club\, please feel free to email Meriah at mcaswell@carletonplace.ca  or visit our website for a full list of books and more detail.
